The management of the university agreed to re-open the school maintaining their earlier policy that students should not be allowed to write examinations if their tuition fees are unpaid.

The University Vice Chancellor, Oladipo Aina made this known after a stake-holder’s forum organized to find a solution to the student/management crisis.

Students had earlier responded to the ‘No Fees, No Lecture’ policy by staging a violent protest against the school which led a closure of the institution.

The University however argued that financial constrain had been responsible for initiating the policy adding that students were owing the school up to N2 billion.

By Citizens Platfrom

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah has said that the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) would boost once the 22 federal government-owned airports under the remodelling programme is completed because they would galvanise economic activities and enhance international and domestic travel.

She made this known in her opening speech to welcome President Goodluck Jonathan who laid foundation stone for the construction of international terminal at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and also commissioned the remodelled domestic terminal.

Oduah who described Enugu as the fastest growing airport in the country said the new international terminal with a total floor area of 25,000 square meters would have capacity to handle 500,000 passengers per annum.

“On completion of the terminal, this airport will finally answer its name in the real sense of the word “Akanu Ibiam International Airport” she said.

Oduah projected that by 2015 total domestic and international passenger movement in Nigeria would rise from the present 12 million to 16 million and with better airport facilities and commercial offerings at these airports, air travellers would be increasing by at least 10 per cent every year.

The Minister said Nigeria’s aviation industry must take its rightful place in our national life.

In her words “the industry must become pivotal to the socio-economic development of our country as it is supposed to be and as we proclaim in our Vision, we will continue to do what it takes to deliver just such an industry to Nigerians.

The Minister assured that the international terminal project in Enugu would be completed in December 2014 and together with perishable terminal. The total cost of the project she said is N13.3 billion.
She disclosed that already two international airlines have indicated interest to operate flights into the Enugu airport. She assured that the remodelling of the 22 federally-owned airports would be completed, including the five new international terminals coming on stream in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Kano.

“These were not the only transformation taking place in the aviation sector”, she noted. Others are the aerotropolis projects and the perishable cargo terminal projects.

The labour union alleged that the company management, apart from denying its workers the right to join the union, also prevented them from participating as members of Nigeria Union of Civil, Engineering and Construction Wood Workers, NUCCEWW, an affiliate of NLC.

In a statement by its Chairman, Akporegha Williams, the body warned that such impunity could not be tolerated in a democratic Nigeria and fingered Daewoo’s Project Manager as the major obstacle to industrial peace .

It said: “We view this attitude by the management of Daewoo as an outright defiance of NLC’s position on anti-labour practices.

“We shall resist Daewoo’s stand and for the avoidance of doubt, Congress would strongly advise the management of Daewoo Nigeria Limited to retrace its steps and refrain from this obnoxious practice to avoid a possible face-off with NLC.”

The Lagos State government on Friday announced the ban on operations of Tri-cycles aka Keke Napep from the major roads in the state, “to protect the lives and property of the residents of the state.”

It also vowed to impound any disused and abandoned vehicles across the state, stressing that there were 4,632 vehicles currently abandoned on over 9,100 roads in the state.

This was revealed by Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa at the 2013 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa to mark the sixth anniversary of Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration.

Opeifa said that the state government had held several meetings with the unions on the development, adding “they have agreed to stay away from these roads.”

Some of the roads affected are: the entire Victoria Island, Government Residential Area, GRA Ikeja and Ikoyi. Also on Awolowo road and Awolowo way, Alausa and entire major roads in Surulere Local Government.

Opeifa warned that tri-cycling isn’t a replacement for the now banned motorcycles, stressing “it isn’t a sustainable means of transport for the state especially as Lagos that is a megacity.”

He explained that section 3 of the 2012 Lagos road traffic law also outlawed the operation of the tricycle in the state.

“After that law was gazetted, the state government allowed tricycle to operate on some of these roads because vehicles available in those roads weren’t enough to convey the passengers plying the road,” he said.

Opeifa said the state has enough Bus Rapid Transport, BRT and LAGBUS buses, taxis and others available on these roads and the tricycle were not needed.

Governor Fashola signed the road traffic bill into law last year, aimed at improving safety on the Lagos roads.
