The Federal Government has launched the University Entrepreneurship Development Programme (UNEDEP) to promote self -employment among the youth right from higher institutions of learning.

The Minister of Trade and Investment Olusegun Aganga made this known at the inauguration of the scheme on Tuesday in Abuja. He said the scheme is part of the Federal Government’s strategy to tackle unemployment in the country.

According to Aganga, the Federal Ministry of Education will collaborate with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN) to make the scheme work. The Scheme, he added will provide a mentoring platform for students, reduce poverty and re-orientate the undergraduate toward the right values.

In his words: “UNEDEP’s mission is to ‘catch them young’. The programme focuses on entrepreneurship development of undergraduates and aims to create future entrepreneurs and encourage self-employment and reduce poverty.

“We will achieve this by using the existing Network for African Student Entrepreneurs Club structure and derive standard schedule of activities for all members across all universities,”

Prof. Ruqqayyatu Rufai, the Minister of Education on her own part said unemployment can drastically reduce when the culture of entrepreneurship is promoted in the country among students. She expressed the hope that the effort would assist the nation to achieve sustainable economic growth and development.

“All over the world, entrepreneurship has been identified as the major driver of economic growth and development.

“The success of many economies can be traced to entrepreneurs who started small and then grew to become multinationals,” she said.

HARARE (AFP) – President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday signed Zimbabwe’s new constitution into law, clearing the path to crucial elections later this year.

The longtime ruler inked the document two months after it was overwhelmingly approved in a referendum.

“This day is an historic day, it’s about the future,” Constitutional Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga said at the signing ceremony, held in a marquee erected on the lush green lawns of the State House.

“I can assure you that this document which is before us is a good document.”

A new constitution is one of the pre-conditions for elections to pick a successor to the shaky compromise government Mugabe formed four years ago with his nemesis Morgan Tsvangirai.

The new constitution curtails the president’s powers, limits presidential tenures to two five-year terms and does away with the post of prime minister.

Mugabe, 89, has ruled Zimbabwe since the country gained independence from Britain in 1980.

His 33-year-rule has been tainted by allegations of rights abuses against his opponents and critics.

The constitution was endorsed in a referendum in March and later sailed unopposed through both houses of parliament.

Mugabe and Tsvangirai formed a power-sharing government four years ago to avoid a descent into full-scale conflict in the aftermath of a bloody presidential run-off election in 2008.

The power-sharing government has been hobbled by frequent haggling over the allocations of key government posts, the implementation of key reforms and charges of violence.

Elections should be held this year but the date is yet to be set.

Mugabe and his allies want the polls as soon as possible while Tsvangirai insists on the application of reforms first to ensure a free and fair vote.

Movie Producer & Director Obi Emelonye speaking about the project said: “I wanted to make a film about a subject matter that I have been very passionate about. I never wanted to make an issue based film. But when the crash of June 3, 2012 happened only five days to our London premiere, I became involved.”

Emolonye said he was inspired by the event to create the movie and try to inspire a spirit of hope.

‘Last Flight to Abuja’ made over N8.5m in its first week on the Box Office charts, with casts including top Nollywood stars Omotola Jolade Ekehinde, Jim Iyke, Hakeem Kae Kazim, Uche Odoputa, Franca Brown, Jide Kososo and Uru Eke.

“After watching the film, I want people to leave with a sense of optimism that not all plane accidents end up in disaster.” Emolonye said.

The movie director also said he still commended air travel as the safest mode in Nigeria and everywhere in the world.

The movie also won an award for ” Best Film By An African Abroad” at AMAA 2013 in Bayelsa.

An official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) revealed that Mikel has asked to be excused from the tune-up match in order to rest and take care of personal issues.

“Mikel has said he will prefer to be left out of the friendly game against Mexico later this month. He says he will want to just take a rest after a long season with Chelsea and also take care of personal matters at the same time,” said the federation official on Tuesday.

However the 26-year-old midfielder is said not to have made mention of being excluded from the Fifa 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia in June.

“Nothing has been said about the World Cup qualifiers. He has only asked to be left out of the friendly against Mexico,” the official stated.

Already, the trio of Victor Moses, Kalu Uche and Gabriel Reuben have opted out of the Nigeria squad ahead of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers and Confederations Cup citing injury concerns.
